Efficacy and Benefits of Charcoal


Charcoal is a dark grey or black resembles coal obtained by removing water and other volatile constituents from animal and vegetation substances. Charcoal is made by heating wood or other substances in the absence of oxygen, it only contains impure carbon. It is a source of energy and mainly used as a fuel. 
Charcoal plays a major role in most of the Asian and African countries both in energy and the economic sector. We can consider charcoal as an ideal fuel; the use of charcoal is increasing day by day and become attractive fuel for energy production for its usefulness and advantages. 
Advantages :
  • Charcoal is very essential and popular as cooking fuel. It is widely used for outdoor cooking.
  • Charcoal is cheaper than other fuels or electricity and possible to use as substitute of other fuel.
  • We can use the energy of charcoal as our household’s works such as lighting, communications, and possibly for refrigeration, and cooking.
  • The process of making charcoal is very easy therefore we can made charcoal with little investment. Moreover, transformation efficiency of charcoal is well; require better understanding and control of the carbonization process.
  • The price of charcoal is stable unlike other fuels which increase suddenly.
  • The production of charcoal is based on private sector and local people therefore the local people manage to take benefits from their surrounding environment and resources.
  • Charcoal is being used for industrial purpose for melting iron and blast furnaces and finery forges.
  • Charcoal can be use and activate its effectiveness as a filter. It readily absorbs organic compounds and dissolved in gases and liquids.
  • Charcoal is also used in art for the purpose of drawing and making rough sketches for painting.
  • Recently charcoal is used for horticulture. Charcoal has been using in American gardeners.
  • Charcoal used as a medicine or dietary supplement for gastric problems in the form of charcoal biscuits. In present it can be consumed in tablet, capsule or powder form, for digestive effects.

Disadvantages :
Charcoal is a very inefficient fuel to produce and it is not clean. Although charcoal stoves are more efficient than firewood stoves but they are less efficient than modem fuel stoves such as kerosene and electric stoves. It we widely use charcoal there will be a significant wood consumption when urban households switch from firewood to charcoal; cooking with charcoal uses more wood than cooking with firewood. And the result will be more emission of CO2 which even three to four times more than usual.The use of charcoal is in high volumes of CO2 emissions, as well as of CO and Cb4 However, if charcoal were produced on a sustainable basis (without causing deforestation), it would be neutral to the carbon cycle; the burning of charcoal would simply release timescale C02 back into the air.Charcoal is very cheap so it has very less contribution in economic sector.
Comparing the air emissions from charcoal with emissions from other common fuels :
There is no doubt that the air emissions from charcoal are less than other emissions from other common fuels such as oil, peat and other natural gases.  The making process of charcoal is a partial chemical reduction of wood under controlled conditions. It emits more ash comparing oil, peat and other natural gases.
